Derby Theatre’s existing ventilation / air conditioning plant was in a poor state of repair and we were employed to construct a 100m2 steel platform upon which we installed a new air handling unit delivering 10m3/s of conditioned air, a 260kW chiller, a buffer vessel, and pressurisation unit.

Ductwork was routed from the new air handling unit down into the performance space below. The existing heating system was extended through the roof to provide heating to the new air handling unit and pipework was installed to connect chilled water from the new chiller to the air handling unit. A new BMS system was installed to replace the existing outdated system.

This was an interesting project because of the many constraints placed upon it, such as the requirement to lift our new equipment over the top of the Theatre, which required the use of a 140 Tonne Tower Crane c/w 60m Jib, a fast turnaround 12-week programme, and the fact that all of this had to be carried out without disruption to the Theatre performance programme.
